I pricked my self with safety pin after 4 to 5 hours and one to two drops blood came from finger and the safety pin was in zip bag then can I get HIV by this incident? (2) can a zip bag provide an airtight environment? I have read in your post that in a zip bag still some amount of oxygen which dies the virus...is it true? Thank you very much for your previous reply..and I have read in your post the point of needle injection can give direct access to blood stream. Can point of safety pin give direct access to blood stream?

Hello, and thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver with your questions.

It sounds like you are feeling unsure about HIV transmission. I will do my best to answer your questions.

To start with, no, a zip bag cannot provide an airtight environment for HIV to survive in. Even if a safety pin were to have the virus on it, it would be exposed to air while being placed into the zip bag. As well, there is air already in the zip bag.

When talking about syringes, there is a High Risk associated with sharing them. This is because the barrel of the needle is airtight, and there is a chance that blood from one person using the needle will get pulled into the barrel. If another person then uses the needle, there is a risk that the blood from the airtight barrel will be pushed into their bloodstream, creating a point for direct access.

Since the point of a safety pin is exposed to air, and a safety pin does not contain a barrel, there is no risk that a safety pin will give direct access to the blood stream.

In all of the situations you described there is no risk of acquiring HIV.
