Hi,

I am going through so much of stress.. i have couple of questions and hoping to get a reply from you.

1) What testing method of HIV is reliable? ( Fourth generation combi or PCR ) method.
I called the lab and they called, fourth generation is just an screening test but PCR is 99% sensitive and accurate.
My fourth generation combi test are not non reactive but now the lab guys have confused me.

2) What is the statistical chances of getting HIV in first and one time unprotected virginal exposure with infected partner?

Hello, and thank you for using AIDS Vancouver as your primary source of information about HIV/AIDS issues.

First of all, a PCR test is not required. The fourth generation testing method is considered one of the best there is, and according to many HIV specialists, will give you a conclusive result at 6 weeks. However, we go by the World Health Organisation Guidelines, which considers all HIV testing methods conclusive at 3 months or 84 days.

I am not sure why a PCR test would be necessary, as the 4th Generation Test is as reliable as any other test.

To answer your question regarding statistics, we have searched and have not been able to find a current statistics on sero-discordant relationships.

I trust I have answered your question sufficiently. Should you have further inquiries you are welcome to write back, or visit http://www.aidsvancouver.org for more information.

Sincerely,

Marta
