Hello Doctor, I french kissed another guy by one hour and a half or two hour with two sores on the lips (with no blood) and irritated throat due to tonsillitis. Is there a risk I could get HIV from him? Thanks. I'm scared.

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline.

There is no risk of HIV from kissing with no blood present. Saliva contains an enzyme that prevents HIV from being transmitted, making HIV transmission through the mouth difficult in most situations. Any sores or cuts around your lips would not provide enough access to the bloodstream to increase risk.

For more information about HIV you can always visit the AIDS Vancouver website or CATIE.ca.

I hope this information helps to answer your questions.
