hello.please should i get tested if: i was in bar fight just as witness - helping one guy with bleeding nose,i had some small fresh blood spots - his blood on hand and accidentaly scratched my finger on broken glass - the result was tiny cut which stopped bleeding in few min,i licked it and sucked it so there would be no dirt.in case the man's blood while still fresh came in contact with my cut - or i did cut the finger right where his blood spotted my skin - is this suficient to get infected?in case someone cut his finger on the same glass few secs before me could i get infected?thanks a lot.

Hi there, thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for HIV and AIDS related information.

To answer your question you are not at risk for HIV whatsoever. The HIV virus is actually a very weak virus that can't be passed on after exposure to the air. Any blood that you would have come into contact with would have been exposed to the air and any HIV would be unable to infect. Today HIV transmission really only occurs as a result of unprotected anal or vaginal sex, the sharing needles (with a barrel).

Also small cuts such as the one you described do not actually provide access for the HIV to the blood stream. Small cuts begin to heal immediately and create barriers preventing viruses from entering the bloodstream.

You have nothing to worry about whatsoever about HIV based on this experience. Based on this experience alone you do not need to be tested for HIV. I hope that that answers your question. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us again.

In health,

Arne
