Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. We are happy to help!

In BC, sports do not not require you to disclose your status. It is my guess that you will not be required to, but I cannot speak on behalf of the roller derby league as I do not know where it is located. I would recommend speaking directly with the league or doing research online with them to see if you can find out more information. In regular sports in general, HIV cannot be transmitted in typical cases of contact. This is because the HIV virus dies when it is exposed to air, so it cannot be transmitted if you had a cut. Furthermore, HIV cannot enter the body through closed skin, or even through superficial cuts! These routes of access that would be present in sports would not allow HIV to be passed on.

You are eligible to play roller derby- we hope you have fun!

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

In health,

Caroline
