Hello. I am a heterosexual woman who gave a handjob to a heterosexual male, HIV status unknown. My concern is around a small paper cut on the outside edge of my pinky finger. The hand with the cut (which was maybe .5 cm and not bleeding) was the one in contact with the penis. Althought there was pre cum near the head, the pinky finger was nearer the base (and therefore had less exposure but certainly had some contact with pre-seminal fluid) The man finished himself off and when we were done, I used some hand sanitizer, which alerted me to the paper cut , which I had not previously noticed. What are the potential risks involved, regarding STI's in particularly HIV? I am prone to anxiety and am extremely worried about this scenario. Any advice would be appreciated. thank you

Hi there and thanks for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS related information.

The simple answer to your question is no, you have not been exposed to HIV. For an HIV risk to exist, certain HIV+ body fluids (i.e. semen, anal/vaginal fluids, blood) must come into direct contact with the bloodstream of an HIV- individual. The paper cut, to which you refer, would not be considered a direct contact to your bloodstream. Additionally, HIV is an extremely weak virus and dies once exposed to the air.

Although an HIV test is not necessary for this activity, we do encourage all sexually active individuals be tested for all Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's), including HIV on a regular basis as part of your over-all health maintenance program.

I trust I have addressed your concerns however, should further information be required, feel free to contact us again.
