Hello,
I met a girl and have sex wearing condom. After sex I checked the condom. I filled up the condom with water and there was no leak. The condom didn't break or slipped. But I am worried. What is the risk of getting hiv in this case?

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the possibility of HIV transmission in the event that you had engaged in vaginal penetrative sex while wearing a condom.

From the information given, this scenario is determined to be Low Risk (evidence of transmission occurs through these activities when certain conditions are met). The act of protected vaginal intercourse is considered to be of Low Risk due to the possibility of condom slippage or misuse. As you have indicated, you were diligent in your condom use during the event.

Condom use can be a highly effective way of protecting oneself from HIV transmission. However, condom use does not provide a 100% guarantee that transmission will not occur.

It is important to know your status, as well as your partner's status when frequently engaged in sexual activity (such as protected or unprotected penetrative sex).

If you are interested, there are other ways that you can protect yourself from HIV transmission. First, as mentioned above, knowing your status and your partner's status is important. If your partner is living with HIV and is regularly adhering to their ART medicine regime, they may be considered 'Undetectable' meaning they are unable to transmit the virus to their partners. If you are continuously engaging in High, Low, or Negligible Risk, there are other biomedical options you may explore such as PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).

Recommendation: Refer to a healthcare provider for regular HIV screening if you continue to engage in protected sex acts.

All the best,

AIDS Vancouver Online/Helpline, Cody
