I had taken a bunch of different tests, antibodies, Rapids, antigens, PCRs.
My question is on one of my PCR tests: I took this test twice, at two different labs. One test the lab results were "DNA PCR" non reactive/not detected the next test just said "HIVPCR" with two options HIV PCR copies and HIV PCR log copies both were under the reference range of a prefixed value. My question is: is was the second test a RNA or DNA?

Thank you

Hi there!

Thanks for your great question about HIV testing, hopefully this will be able to help you.

Since I was not there administering your test, I have no way of knowing whether it was an RNA/DNA test. However, the tests you're referring to are both NAAT tests (either pooled RNA "early test" or PCR RNA/DNA test).

Instead, I will give you some general information about the NAAT tests, which I hope will be helpful to you. You specified that one of the tests was the DNA PCR test. This test is usually given 2-3 weeks post exposure and it tests the genetic material of HIV itself. This test was found to be 99.6% accurate within 2-3 weeks.

If the other test was the "early RNA test" administered usually within 10-12 days, this test detects viral RNA in blood, without any antibodies being present yet. This test is 90% accurate at 10-12 days, 95-98% accurate at 6 weeks, and 99% accurate at 12 weeks.

If you're still wondering about more specifics of the tests you took, consider pairing with your health care practitioner, or phoning/visiting the lab where you had the tests done, as they will be able to answer your specific questions.
