My last possible exposure was with a male of unknown status. It was unprotected vaginal intercourse. I have since then taken a 6 week test and a 8 week test through my doctors and both were negative. I have developed some major anxiety waiting to hit the 12 week mark and i was just wondering if i could get some insight on how accurate my results are. I am also from Ontario and have gotten many different responses on what type of test is being used by peel public health labs. I know it is either the 3rd generation or the 4th generation DUO. Please help as i am so anxious.

Hello and thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

Getting tested for HIV after unprotected vaginal intercourse was a great idea. Your test results at 6 and 8 weeks are a good indicator of your HIV status, and I'm glad to see that you plan to get tested again at 12 weeks in order to have a conclusive result.

While I understand you must be feeling extremely anxious while waiting you are doing the right thing by being tested. Testing in Canada uses 3rd or 4th generation tests which are reliable and which are conclusive at 12 weeks. As for which tests you received, you would have to ask the lab that did your tests what they used. The 3rd and 4th generation tests are accurate, and results at 12 weeks will give you a conclusive result that you can absolutely trust.

Going forward, using condoms is always a good way to help protect both you and your partner from HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). As well getting tested regularly for HIV and STIs if you are sexually active is worth considering as part of maintaining good sexual health.

If you have any other HIV related questions or concerns in the future, please do not hesitate to contact the Helpline again.

All the best,
Marnelle
