My question is whether hiv4th generation test at 28 days detect HIV even when possibly co infected with hepatitis c ? If it cannot detect, why ? Note : assume the patient is unaware of hepatitis c status.
Please answer and thanks.

Hi there and thanks for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS related information.

A 4th Generation (DUO/COMBO) test will detect HIV antigens and antibodys within the 3 month window period, even when there is a co-infection with Hepatitis C. A 4th Generation Test at 28 days, post-exposure is a very good indicator as to your status. The Hepatitis C infection and HIV infection, although tested with the same blood, look for different types of antibodies. This is similar to the same blood test to be used to access liver functions versus kidney functions. In other words, the same blood test can all be drawn at once and then sent to different labs for disease detection

There is one caveat that should be addressed. Individuals whom are already on a Hepatitis C treatment must wait for conclusive results for HIV testing.

I trust I have addressed your concerns however, should further information be required, feel free to contact us again.

In good health,

Jonathan, AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
