I am confused. If transmission from siliva is so low risk how can it be detected thru the oral test given by many Dr. and sold over the counter? thanks

Hi there! Thanks for contacting us with your HIV related questions and concerns. We're happy to help!

The reason that this test works is because it's not testing for the HIV material itself. This is not found in saliva which is why there is No Risk of transmission through saliva. Instead, the oraquick test tests for antibodies that are found around your gums/cheeks. Antibodies are the molecules that are made in your body against specific viruses and bacteria.

Just to note, here at AIDS Vancouver, we don't recommend at home tests, which I know the oraquick test is available as! Additionally, the oral test in general, may not be as accurate as the blood tests, so this is something to discuss with your health care professional as they will be able to advise you for the best test for your situation!

I hope this helped,
Sincerely,

Christina
