I would like to thank you in advance for your amazing work. Quick question...So HIV enters the male body through the urethra. How is it that it survives the pee. I mean males pee constantly....wouldnt pee kill it?

Hi there and thanks for contacting us with your HIV related questions and concerns. We're happy to help!

This is a very interesting question, and something I haven't been asked before! I'm happy to answer these questions!

HIV, when it enters the urethra, gets taken up by those cells in the mucous membrane into the bloodstream, and that's how an HIV infection occurs. You're not peeing during sexual intercourse, so when the bodily fluids get into your urethra, they're free to be passed into the blood, and what happens after that (i.e. urinating after) no longer matters.

I hope that helps!

Here is some more information about how HIV infections occur: http://www.avert.org/hiv-transmission-prevention/unprotected-sex

sincerely,

Christina
