Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

We are happy to help answer your questions, and hope the information can provide you with some relief.

First, we can tell you a little more about the HIV test you carried out:

ABOUT 4th GENERATION EIA

* looks for both P24 antigen AND antibodies

* P24 antigen is detectable immediately after infection and for the first few weeks

* most people develop detectable antibodies between 21 and 25 days post-exposure

* many HIV specialists consider this test conclusive as early as 6 weeks post-exposure since, it is so highly reliable

1. The results of a 4th Generation EIA at 31 days post-exposure can provide a good idea about your HIV status and, may not change.

2. Here in British Columbia, we follow guidelines that suggest carrying out an HIV test at 3 months post-exposure is the *safest action* to take after engaging in a high-risk activity (e.g. unprotected sexual intercourse).

Many people seem to share similar fears about how their HIV status may affect their future and families. We want to let you know that here at AIDS Vancouver, we support individuals in need of care and treatment related to HIV in every way we can. Community members, including families, who are affected by HIV will always be welcome to access the services our agency provides. We trust we have answered your questions, and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

Sincerely,

Marta
