Hello, and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I understand you are concerned about your test results. I will be glad to help.

The situation you described only poses a low risk for acquiring HIV. Our saliva has an enzyme that damages the HIV virus, and therefore protects us. Also, it is unlikely that significant amounts of blood have entered your mouth from that situation. Overall, you are not at high risk for acquiring HIV, but if you like you can have a test done for your peace of mind. A test is considered conclusive after 12 weeks post-exposure.

I hope I was able to answer your question. Please feel free to contact us again for more information.

Sincerely,

Ali
