At the end of April I fingered a sex worker in SE Asia with a 3-4 mm deep and 6 mm long cut on my finger. Cut was not bleeding and was 2-3 days old. The cut was almost totally healed over 2 days after the incident.

Is there any need for an HIV test?

Hello and thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver with your question. It sounds like you are concerned about your risk of HIV transmission after fingering a Commercial Sex Trade Worker (CSW) with a superficial cut on your finger.

First of all, a CSW is no more likely that anyone else to be HIV positive. On this forum, we focus on the activities performed, not the individuals performing them.

Fingering is considered a Negligible Risk activity. This means that all of the practices assigned to this risk level present a potential for HIV transmission because they do involve the exchange of body fluids. However, there has never been a confirmed report.

From my understanding, there was no direct access to your bloodstream. The superficial cut would have to have been actively bleeding and be deep enough to require stitches or surgery to potentially provide access to the bloodstream.

Here at AIDS Vancouver, we recommend that everyone make HIV testing a part of their regular health care maintenance routine. If your feel that you need a test after reading the information provided, you can ask your doctor for a test.
