Hi, I know this is my anxiety/phobia talking, but is it possible to get HIV from getting a test? I usually get the clearview test which has a retractable one time use lancet in the package. However, this time they gave me the Uni Gold (I think that is what is called) and they used a lancet that had a plastic circle that twists off and exposes the needle. The also use a pipette to capture the blood. Is it possible either could have had blood on them from a prior use and infected me? I didn't see any blood on them and they were both exposed to the air a few minutes before I was tested. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source of HIV/AIDS-related information.

The information that we have received from the World Health Organization indicates that they are not seeing any reports of transmission from re-using equipment for blood testing. Doctors and healthcare professional follow strict guidelines to ensure that testing is safe. Again, as I mentioned, we have not seen any reports in recent years of HIV being transmitted in this way.

If you ever feel uncomfortable with testing, I would suggest talking to the healthcare professional and asking questions about testing guidelines.

I hope that I have answered your question. Please feel free to contact us again should you have any further questions.

In health,

Natalie
