Hi there and thank you for reaching out to AIDS Vancouver with your questions. We're happy to help! It sounds like you're concerned about the risk of acquiring HIV in a healthcare setting.

I am going to ease your mind and tell you that the situation you have described is a no risk situation. HIV is a very delicate virus, and cannot survive for long outside of the human body. Any body fluid containing HIV, once exposed to oxygen in the air, would become damaged and would no longer be able to transmit. Thus, even if the medical instrument that your doctor was using had body fluids on its surface, the fluid would have already been exposed to the air and would not be able to transmit HIV.

Furthermore, if you are concerned with medical malpractice in the hospital that you visited, it would be a good idea to go back and talk to a staff member at this hospital. They would be able to ease your concerns.

I hope I have answered your question, and feel free to contact us with any further concerns.

Regards,

Sierra, Helpline Volunteer
