Hi
I had a sex with an unknown escort girl but, it was protected.
since I don't know that which kind of condom she used and it was a good one or not, I'm concern to for HIV infection. is it possible HIV transmission has happened for me? or is it possible that condom failed during sex and I didn't know that?
should I take any PEP pill or do HIV test?

Hi there, and thanks a lot for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your HIV/AIDS related health information. It seems you're concerned about the possibility of HIV transmitting during an encounter. We're happy to answer that question for you.

First off, it's great you used a condom for your encounter. Condom use substantially reduces the risk of the transmission of both HIV and other STIs. Generally, if the condom was bought in a store it likely provided sufficient protection. There is no reason to think that a substandard condom was used. Further, if the condom was bought as they normally are and used appropriately, there is a low risk of HIV transmitting. While condom breaks do happen, they are sufficiently rare so as to say that the risk of HIV transmitting is low if a condom is used. We weren't there so we cannot comment on whether the condom used in your case broke or not.

We at AIDS Vancouver recommend routine HIV testing for all sexually active individuals. Have you ever gone for a test? If not, we'd suggest you go for a test just as a routine precaution. PEP is not required in this case.

If you'd like any more information on condom use, we encourage you to check out one of our favourite resources at [SmartSex](http://smartsexresource.com/topics/condoms).

Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your question, we hope it has been answered fully.
