Hello, and thank you for using AIDS Vancouver as your source of information about HIV/AIDS issues.

I am happy to inform you that you are not at risk of an HIV infection. HIV is a weak virus outside the body, and dies upon exposure to oxygen. Therefore, HIV cannot live on the surface of an individual's skin, even if there is a raw cut or a cut that is actively bleeding. For a risk to exist, specific HIV positive fluids (e.g. semen, anal/vaginal fluids, blood) must directly access the bloodstream of an HIV negative individual (e.g. unprotected sex, sharing needles). In what you described, this did not happen.

I trust I have answered your question sufficiently. Feel free to write back to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline, or visit http://www.aidsvancouver.org for more information.

Sincerely,

Marta
