I just went to take a hiv test. On the paper it said "Negative For Hiv - 1/2 antibodies" what does the 1/2 antibodies mean? Do i have to take another test?

Hello,

Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver for your HIV/AIDS related questions.

I'm not sure if you are aware that there is a window period between exposure and conclusive testing results which states that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as our own guidelines, results are conclusive at 84 days (3 months). The "1/2 antibodies" means that the HIV test you received tested for both HIV strains. There are two strains of HIV: HIV 1 and 2. All current HIV testing methods test for both HIV 1 and HIV 2.

I trust I have answered your questions. Should further inquiries arise, please don't hesitate to contact us again.
