I just bought a Nutella from the supermarket. But I noticed when I opened it, it wasn't sealed completely. But the oil is on top and looks untouched. So I mixed it and ate it with bread. My worry is that someone might have dripped blood into the nutella and me causing to have hiv. Please help.

Hi there, and thanks a lot for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for you HIV/AIDS related health information.

It sounds like you are concerned about your risk of HIV transmission after you ate Nutella that you think could have possibly contained blood.

The situation that you have described is a No Risk situation. Here are some of the reasons why:

* HIV is a Human-to-Human virus. It cannot be transmitted to you by an object or by food.

* HIV needs a human host to survive. Once HIV is outside of the body and exposed to oxygen it can no longer transmit. Any blood containing HIV in the Nutella was outside of the human body, exposed to oxygen and thus could not transit HIV to you.

* Saliva has an enzyme that inhibits the transmission of HIV. Any Nutella that you ate, came into contact with your saliva and the enzyme within it.

* HIV needs direct access to your bloodstream in order to transmit. There was no direct access to your bloodstream.

* It is highly unlikely that an individual opened the Nutella explicitly to put blood containing HIV in it.
