Hi there,

Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for HIV related information! I hope we can provide useful and helpful information.

First of all, protected sex (with a condom) is considered a No Risk activity as the condom prevents exchange of body fluids.

In terms of testing, most HIV tests show 95-98% accuracy within 4-6 weeks, and are considered conclusive at 3 months. The test you took, is a DNA PCR test, which is normal given 2-3 weeks post-exposure at which time it's 99.6% accurate. However, since your activity was no risk, you don't necessarily need to be retested at the end of the window period. If however you are still worried, that would be the only way to know for sure.

Additionally, regarding your throat pain, here at AIDS Vancouver we don't use symptoms to diagnose HIV since they often mirror other viral infections such as the flu. Consider teaming up with your doctor or health care professional regarding these symptoms!

I have attached the transmission equation for HIV which makes it easy to see if activities have a risk associated or not:
HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection

I hope this was helpful!

Sincerely,

Christina
