Hi, pls I had sex with a commercial sex worker and she later discovered the condom had broken, we ended the sex immediately and didn't ejaculate at all. Pls can I possibly be infected with HIV? I'm so worried.

Hello and thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your questions.

It sounds like you are worried about whether you have acquired HIV.

To help you understand how HIV is acquired below is a diagram of the transmission equation.

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection

You would have to have all three present from each category in order for you to acquire HIV. For example, for you to be infected you would've had to have some blood contact with the commercial sex worker and wound or an opening on your penis in order for HIV to directly enter your bloodstream. Based on what you've told me it's unlikely for you to have acquired HIV because you were having protected sex and immediately stopped having sex once you realized the condom broke and as well there was no ejaculation that happened. If you're still feeling unsure I suggest you get yourself tested because that's the only way to know for sure. Here at AIDS Vancouver we advocate HIV testing because that is the only way to be certain whether you have acquired HIV or not. You can partner up with your health care provider or you can go to any hospitals or clinics to get tested for HIV.

I hope I've answered your question and helped alleviate your distress. If you have more questions or would like to talk further you can email us anonymously at helpline@aidsvancouver.org or call one of our Helpline volunteers at 604 253 0566.

All the best,
