Hi Doc,

This might sound like a repeat question but I got a non-erotic full body massage a month a half ago. Even though I got it at a five star hotel (i.e. a non-sleezy massage parlor) and there was no sexual contact, I fantasized in my mind a little and secreted pre-cum. The masseurs were really pretty. I know it sounds stupid but I just want to be honest here.

Now I am worried that if there was a previous customer who did the same and was HIV positive with maximum viral load or even worse (but unlikely the case) someone had sex with the masseur on the massage table a few minutes before I arrived and sexual fluids were on the massage table (I.e. The massage table was not cleaned before me), what are the chances of getting infected from this horrendous episode. Previously I wasn't worried at all but a month after the episode I had mild flu like symptoms and severe headaches that have been on and off for the last three weeks. Also, the headaches started before the flu. I'm panicking.

Also prior to the massage, another lady bathed me with water and soap (i.e. it was a Turkish Bath) while I lay naked on a ceramic table. Same question and concern here as above regarding pre-cum/HIV virus lying around mixed with water on the ceramic table.

I always have open soars only back due to acne and during the bath the lady ruptured a few acne using her nails.

What is the risk for me? Really panicking here...

Hello,

Thank you for choosing the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline as your source of HIV/AIDS related questions and information.

The situation you have described poses no risk for the transmission of HIV. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, and as such can only survive inside a human host. HIV is a fragile virus and immediately begins to degrade and become inviable upon contact with the air. Therefore, even if there were bodily fluids from an HIV positive person still on the massage table when you laid on it, any HIV in the fluids would have been degraded and would pose no risk to you.

In regards to your symptoms, we do not use symptoms as an indication of the presence of HIV, as they can be highly variable and do not show up in everyone. The only way to be sure of your HIV status is to get tested.

I would encourage you to move on from this encounter and be confident in your HIV negative status.

In health,
Erin
