Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

We are happy to help answer your questions. It sounds like you have received an antibody test at 7 weeks post-exposure, and this is great news. Most individuals develop detectable antibodies *between 21 and 25 days post-exposure*, so by 49 days (7 weeks) post-exposure a reliable indication of your status can be achieved. We follow guidelines from the BC CDC which suggest that carrying out an HIV test at 12 weeks post-exposure would be the *safest measure* since, in British Columbia, over 99% of individuals who have acquired HIV receive an accurate indication of their status by this time. Therefore, it is *very unlikely* that your status will change between 7 weeks post-exposure and 12 weeks post-exposure.

Check out this link for [more information](http://www.bccdc.ca/dis-cond/a-z/_h/HIVAIDS/overview/default.htm#heading5) about the HIV testing procedure in BC

Additionally, you may consider looking at our [Risk Chart](http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart) to see which activities are less likely to transmit HIV than others!

We trust we have answered your questions and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

Sincerely,

Marta
