I had a 12 week hiv combo dual 1-2 come back negative along with stds all negative. The only thing I had was 6 weeks after I got soar throat and swollen tonsils which they still are swollen going on three months. I have red blotches under my skin on my cheeks and my neck looks sunburned can I have tested false negative at 12 weeks? The lady who drew my blood said hiv is dormant for 10 years so I should get tested every year for ten yes. but once you have the virus wouldn't it show in bloom work?

Hi,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I will try and answer your questions as best I can.

The HIV combo dual test also known as the 4th Generation Test is both a P24 antigen test and an antibody test . P24 is detectable immediately after infection and only for the first few weeks. The antibody test has a window period of 4-12 weeks. Most HIV specialists consider this "DUO" test conclusive at 6 weeks. The World Health Organization considers all tests conclusive at 12 weeks.

HIV symptoms can mirror other viral infections or can be due or explained to other things, testing is the only way to know for sure. It sounds like you already got tested and that is a great step. I suggest partnering with a doctor to find out more about your health concerns.

Lastly, to address the comment about HIV being dormant for 10 years by the health care professional. Individuals living with HIV may not necessarily show signs of infection as long as their immune system remains strong and keeps the virus from multiplying and replicating out of control. As a result, this may have been misinterpreted by this particular health care professional. However, as addressed earlier, you taking the proactive step of getting testing will conclusively show whether you have acquired HIV or not. As per AIDS Vancouver recommendations, we suggest sexually active individuals to have regular sexually transmitted infection testing and HIV testing annually, bi-annually, 3 months or 6 months- depending on your circumstances.
