Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the accuracy of your 4th Generation Duo test after engaging in protected vaginal intercourse. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be Low Risk (Evidence of transmission occurs through these activities when certain conditions are met).

The 4th Generation Duo test is a blood test that looks for antibodies AND P24 protein antigens. It is commonly referred to as the "combination," "Combo" or "DUO" test. Fourth-generation HIV tests can detect HIV infection in 50% of people by 18 days after infection; 95% of people by 34 days after infection; and 99% of people by one and a half months after infection(1).

Most HIV specialists consider this "DUO" test conclusive at 6 weeks. However, official HIV testing guidelines still recommend re-testing at 12 weeks for completely conclusive results, when accuracy is 99.9%.

You state that you took a 4th Generation Duo test 26 days, or approximately 3.5 weeks, after the potential exposure. Your results were negative. You can see from above, that the 4th Generation Duo test can detect HIV infection very early on in many people and is highly accurate. In fact, you tested just below the 34 day window when HIV infection is detected in 95% of people.

We would recommend that you retest at 6 weeks, when most HIV specialists consider this "DUO" test conclusive, and then again at 12 weeks, when official HIV testing guidelines state that results are *completely conclusive* with an accuracy is 99.9%.

Recommendation: Refer to your health care provider for an HIV test at 6 weeks and again at 12 weeks, when official HIV testing guidelines consider results completely conclusive with an accuracy of 99.9%.

Regards,
