Hi there, i had anal and oral sex (i am male-top) with a male. After few weeks, he have told me that he is HIV+ and syphilis+. Hence I tested for HIV using 3rd generation antibody test kit on 50 & 55 days of potential exposure. Both results showed negative. However, on 52 day, I have some swollen muscle on my neck and palate burning. As far as I remember, no rashes appeared and no mouth ulcer or low grade fever. Hence, what are chances to get same results after 90 days?

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline.

About 95% of HIV infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks after exposure. This means that only about 5% of results change if the test is taken later (12 weeks or more after exposure). So, it is unlikely that your results will change when you take the test again, but it is still a good idea to take it again at 12 weeks after exposure for conclusive results.

You may already know this, but unprotected penetrative sex is considered to be a high risk of acquiring HIV while protected sex (with a condom) is considered to be low risk and oral sex is considered to be low risk.

In regards to the symptoms you've been experiencing, at AIDS Vancouver we do not go by symptoms as an indicator of HIV. This is because symptoms can be present for any number of reasons that are not related to HIV. My recommendation would be to not worry too much about symptoms for the moment, or if they persist to visit your doctor and partner with them in figuring out the cause and hopefully finding treatment as well.

For more information about HIV you can visit CATIE.ca or the AIDS Vancouver website.

I hope this information helps to answer your questions.
