I had unprotected sex with a guy and swallowed a small amount of precum while giving oral. I do not know his status but he says he is negative. I was tested approximately 8 weeks after, both the RNA qualitative HIV test and the normal antibody. Both came back negative but I still am concerned. Is there a chance that I could be positive or am I just overthinking this?

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting our Helpline for HIV related information. We are happy to assist you.

I can see that you're still feeling anxiety about your HIV status after an unprotected sex exposure and a negative test result.

Unprotected sex is a high risk activity for HIV transmission, so it is good that you have taken the initiative to get tested. It is good to take care of your own health as best as you can, regardless of what your partner says about their HIV status. Giving oral sex is considered a low risk, because the salive contains enzymes that inhibit the virus, making it difficult to transmit orally.

RNA tests are usually used for early detection, and can detect HIV earlier than standard types of tests (at around 2 weeks). The antibody tests are considered fully conclusive after 3 months. However, they are 95% conclusive after 4-6 weeks. The newer test, the 4th Generation Duo/Combo, is even more accurate, with many experts considering it conclusive after 6 weeks. In your case, it is extremely likely that your 8 week result is accurate. However, we usually recommend a followup antibody test at 3 months, which you may want to take for your peace of mind, since you seem to be feeling a lot of anxiety about this.

I hope I have addressed your concerns. Feel free to contact us again through our forums, email, or phone line if you have further questions.

Thanks,

Sandra
