Hi there,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS-related information.

Technically speaking, no. Someone has to be HIV positive before they can transmit HIV to someone else through unprotected sex. However, given that over half of new HIV infections occur when someone is HIV positive but does not know their status, we advise that people continue to use condoms and lube when having sex with multiple partners to reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs/STDs. Although most STI/STD like chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea are curable or are treatable with medication (i.e. herpes), there is still some risk through unprotected sex.

For this reason, at AIDS Vancouver, we recommend that all sexually active people get themselves tested regularly for HIV and other STIs, depending on how often they have sex.

If you have further questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask

Best
