Hi I was in a situation where I was giving someone a handjob and my finger nail cut him so he started bleeding and it got all over my hand. I do not remember if I had any cuts on my hands. Is it possible to transmit HIV this way if he has the virus?

Thank you

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I understand you are concerned about the risk of acquiring HIV from touching blood, and I will be more than glad to address your concerns.

Any blood or other bodily fluids that are outside of the body are considered non-transmissible for the HIV virus. That is because the HIV virus dies very quickly upon exposure to air. On top of that, HIV is not transmitted through intact skin, or even through superficial cuts. Therefore, getting blood on your skin is a "no risk" situation.

Sincerely,

Ali
