Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. From what I understand, you have had a dark brown spot appear on your foot after having eaten food at a hotel.

You are at NO RISK of HIV transmission. Here are the reasons why:

* HIV needs a HUMAN HOST to survive. HIV cannot survive in food.

* Once HIV is outside of the body and exposed to air, it dies and can no longer transmit.

* HIV cannot transmit from Human-to food-to human

* Saliva in your mouth has an enzyme in it that inhibits the transmission of HIV.

* There was NO direct access for the virus to enter your bloodstream.

For more information about HIV, I would encourage you to look at the following resources:

  • Risk Assessment Chart

  • Smart Sex Resource

  • AVERT.org

  • Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
