Hello..I am from india. Last evening i had gone to a village for some work. I had gone there on my bike. As i was going on my bike, i saw a man urinating by the road. I am not sure whether the man was urinating or masturbating. Suddenly a drop of liquid got into my eyes. I am not sure whether it was urine or semen. Considering the fact that the liquid substance that got into my eyes was semen and the man urinating or masturbating by the road was hiv positive. Is there any possibility that i might have acquired hiv from this exposure?

Hello and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS-related information.

From the situation that you have described, your are not at risk of HIV transmission. You do not need to be tested.

Urine does not transmit HIV. Semen can transmit HIV, however, the virus requires direct access to enter the bloodstream and dies upon exposure to air. Therefore, the virus would die before making contact with your eye.

For more information on risky activities for HIV transmission, please take a look at the Risk Assessment Chart on the left-hand-side of the Helpline homepage.

I hope that I have addressed your concerns. Please feel free to contact us again should you have any further questions.

In health,

Natalie,

AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
