Hi there! Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online with your HIV related questions and concerns. We are happy to help!

I am attaching the HIV transmission equation below, as it makes it easier to visualize and understand what is necessary for there to be a risk of HIV transmission:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection

In regards to sucking the nipples, this is No Risk because there is no sort of bodily fluids involved.

In regards to licking the vagina, or giving oral sex, this is considered a Low Risk, however the reports of infection based on this activity are usually under specific conditions (such as having major dental work done which provides direct access to the blood stream in the mouth).

Although your situation doesn't pose a high risk, here at AIDS Vancouver we recommend that everyone who is sexually active get tested regularly as part of their sexual health maintenance.

HIV testing sites can be found by calling your doctor/hospital/clinic, and many are anonymous.

Hopefully this helped!
Sincerely,

Christina
