Hello. Something happened last night that made me worried. I already had a mouth ulcer and i accidentally used the hookah pipe on a caffeteria without using the plastic thing for protection. In addition some water particles from the bowl got in my mouth while inhaling. Considering that someone before me had the virus and actually used the pipe while having a cut in his lips or somehow the virus survived in the water of the bowl cuz its closed and sealed, am i at any risk for hiv because i have a mouth ulcer? I know this sounds really crazy, im just worried. Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your HIV related questions and concerns. We're happy to help!

I understand this must have been a concerning situation for you, but hopefully my answer helps to ease some of your worries!

This situation has No Risk! The reason is that HIV is a delicate virus that cannot survive outside of the body. That means that once it's out of the body and in the general environment, it becomes damaged and inactivated, and can no longer be passed on. THis includes if any virus was in the bowl, same factors apply!
Further, your mouth ulcer is not likely to provide direct access to the bloodstream, as a wound normally needs to be severe and either gushing blood or in need of medical attention such as stitches in order to do so. Additionally, saliva contains an enzyme that helps to break down viruses and bacteria, providing further protection.

Overall, your situation is No Risk for HIV, and there is no reason for you to worry or be concerned.

I hope this helped!
Check out our website or avert.org for more reliable HIV information.

Sincerely,

Christina
