Hi there, and thanks a lot for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for you HIV/AIDS related health information.

It sounds like you are concerned about your risk of HIV transmission.

Non-insertive mutual masturbation and simply rubbing each other's skin or hugging are all no risk activities.

From your question, I cannot make out whether or not the penis-vagina contact was unprotected sexual intercourse or not. Just to be safe, I will give you the risk assessment for unprotected vaginal sex.

Unprotected vaginal sex is considered a High Risk activity. This means it can present a potential for HIV transmission because it involves an exchange of body fluids. In addition, a significant number of scientific studies have repeatedly associated the activities with HIV infection. There have been a lot of confirmed reports of infection in this way.

Here at AIDS Vancouver we encourage everyone to make HIV testing a part of their regular health care maintenance routine. The only way to know your status is to be tested.

I would encourage you to check out the following resources about HIV:

  • HIV Basics

  • Risk Assessment Chart

  • Smart Sex Resource

  • Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
