I am a guy and I got raped when I was at the age of seven. And then now I am 24, only the symptoms of hiv appear. Is this case possible ? It is already more than 15 years.

Hello, and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. Thank you for sharing such a personal story, as I can imagine it would be quite difficult to do so. I will be more than glad to address your concerns.

The only symptoms that one shows after acquiring HIV are usually flu-like symptoms in the first 4-6 weeks after exposure. This is because the body has just encountered a foreign virus. Some people, however, do not show any symptoms when they acquire HIV. There are no symptoms of HIV after this period. Now, if someone acquired HIV and was not treated, the HIV will progress to AIDS in about 8 years. At that point, the person becomes extremely sick with severe infections, since the immune system is too weak to fight it off. It doesn't sound like that is the case with you, and therefore it does not seem like you have acquired HIV from that situation. The HIV would have progressed to AIDS, and it wouldn't remain dormant for 15 years.

For your absolute peace of mind, I would recommend that you go for an HIV test, so that you can stop worrying about this matter.

Sincerely,

Ali
