Hello, I have a question , I touched a wet doorknob (from someone washing their hands) and without thinking I just wiped my fingers on my shirt and then went to urinate (touching my penis with the same hand).
Can you get hiv like that?
Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the risk of HIV transmission in the even that you touched a wet doorknob, and then touched your penis with the same hand.
From the information given, this scenario is determined to be of No Risk (HIV transmission is not possible in the given scenario). As you noted, the wet doorknob was likely due to the person before you having washed their hands. This would likely mean that there was no HIV positive fluid on the doorknob itself. If there had been, there would still be No Risk of HIV transmission to you. HIV undergoes a rapid reduction in concentration when outside of the body, making it effectively impossible to transmit to another person (unless in an enclosed space such as a needle) (1).
Please also consider the following:
HIV is not able to be transmitted through activities such as hugging, kissing, shaking hands, sharing a toilet, or sharing dishes (2).
This is because HIV specifically requires a set of circumstances to be fulfilled in order for HIV transmission to occur. If you take a look at our Transmission Equation, you will see that in order for HIV transmission to occur, there must be a presence of HIV positive fluid (blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal fluid, pre-cum, or breast milk), with direct access to the bloodstream, through a High, Low, or Negligible Risk activity.
Recommendation: No need for HIV screening, please refer to health care provider for additional health related questions.
All the best,
