Hi there!
Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your HIV related questions or concerns. We are happy to help!

I understand you're worried about the accuracy of your test results. Let me clear that up for you.

You've had several HIV tests done, all negative, the most recent of which was 6 months post exposure. All HIV tests are considered conclusive at 3 months, except in 4 specific situations. However, even in those 4 situations, all tests are considered conclusive at 6 months. That means that regardless, your test at 6 months is conclusive and should be taken as accurate.

In terms of your symptoms, here at AIDS Vancouver we don't go by symptoms to classify HIV for a number of reasons. First of all, they're often vague and can mimic other viral infections like the flu. Secondly, they're not consistent: some people have them, some don't, and the severity varies. Finally, anxiety can cause people to think they have symptoms a lot of the time when they're awaiting test results. I suggest partnering with a doctor to see if you can figure out what's actually causing these symptoms.

Hopefully this was able to help you!

Sincerely,

Christina
