I'm interested to have sex with shemale/transgender using condom. Is it safe to have sex with transgender? Any health issues would have after sexual intercourse with transgender?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the possibility of HIV transmission in the event that you had engaged in insertive sex with a condom.

From the information given, this scenario is determined to be Low Risk (evidence of transmission occurs through these activities when certain conditions are met). Keeping in mind that insertive sex with a condom is considered Low Risk due to the possibility of the condom being used inappropriately or slippage. Condoms can be very effective in protecting against HIV transmission. However, condoms must be used appropriately to reduce transmission.

It is always suggested that you know your own HIV status and the status of your partner when engaging in sexual activity such as protected or unprotected insertive sex.

Also, we provide risk assessments to the activity not the individual or population. For example, just because someone identifies as a Trans person doesn't mean they are at a higher or lower risk than the general public. We aim to reduce the stigma of HIV by providing attention to the activity rather than the person.

Recommendation: Refer to a healthcare provider for an HIV test and discussion about protected sexual activity.

All the best,

AIDS Vancouver Online/Helpline, Anne
