Hello about two months ago I had anal sex with a guy I met on Grindr, we used a condom I was the insertive partner but it broke when I noticed it broke (probably after 15 seconds 30 max) we immediately stopped. He assured me after this and before that he did not have any diseases, however after a month I had a splitting headache and now two months from that Ive had swollen nodes and a sore throat... I am very scared and I don't wanna die young I know it was stupid from me to engage in that relationship but now I don't know what to do...

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

It is unfortunate that the condom broke but knowing that it did, and that your risk for HIV transmission may have increased, the only way to know for sure whether you have acquired the virus is to get tested. Symptoms alone cannot tell you whether you have HIV.

Testing at 3 months (84 days) after possible exposure to HIV will give you a conclusive result. You can get tested now at a clinic and this can give you a good indication of your status, but testing at 3 months is the standard set by the World Health Organization for an absolute result. You can go to your doctor, or to a health clinic in your area. If you are in the Vancouver, Canada area, we can give you information on clinics if you call the Helpline at (604)696-4666.

Thanks for contacting the Helpline. Please feel free to contact us again if you have other HIV related questions.

Best wishes,

Marnelle
