I had a small cut on my thumb which was only 12hrs old. I went for a massage and i fingured the massage lady (which i believe a sex worker). I didn't put the fingers inside the vagina, i was rubbing with middle finger on outer top portion, but after some time my thumb starts burning sensation (like salt on wound) and there was vaginal fluid. Immediately i washed the hand with soap and water. Iam afraid the possibility of getting HIV. Please advise

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to answer your question.

In your scenario, there would be a negligible risk of HIV transmission. This is because the cut on your hand does not sound deep enough to provide access to the bloodstream for HIV to enter, assuming that the sex worker was HIV positive. For cuts to provide bloodstream access, they must be deep enough to require medical attention or be actively and profusely bleeding.

I hope I have answered your question. If you have any more questions, feel free to post on this forum again, visit http://www.aidsvancouver.com, or call us confidentially at 604-253-0566 ext 299.

Sincerely,

Caroline
