A friend told me that after testing himself with an hiv test kit called first response he tested negative to it. so he opened the kit n put the polysterine membrane in his mouth thinking that it was sterile. he was playing wit it and stupidly found himself chewing and swallowing his saliva. he later on read that the membrane was coated with recombinant hiv virus conjugated with colloidal gold. this led to him becoming emotionally traumatized because he has always had the fears he could be infected with the virus after swallowing it because he also read that gold can resist stomach acid and for that matter the virus too been cojugated with the gold could survive and cause his infection. the incident happened more than 6yrs ago and he has been tested negative to the virus since but sometimes he still habors anxiety and fears that he might be still haboring the virus. can that be possible ?

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline.

An HIV test taken 12 weeks (3 months) or more following exposure is considered to have conclusive results. As long as the HIV tests your friend took were after this time they can be considered to be conclusive. If your friend is still worried there is nothing wrong with taking another test to put their mind at ease.

Also, it is highly unlikely that HIV could be acquired in the manner described. However, the most important thing to remember is that your friend has tested negative for HIV.

For more information about HIV you can always visit the AIDS Vancouver website or CATIE.ca.

I hope this information helps to answer your questions.
