Hello I had protected anal sex with someone of unknown status. I tested after 4 weeks using 4 generation duo tests (about 32 days). I am now in the seventh week. I had a mild headache for a day thst I hope was a tension headache. I am now experiencing a dry cough. Was my test results after 4 weeks reliable? I plan to get tested one more time.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the conclusiveness of a fourth generation duo test at four weeks.

The fourth generation test is referred to as a duo test because it looks for antibodies AND P24 protein antigens. P24 is a protein associated with the viral capsid. It is detectable immediately after infection, and only for the first few weeks. The antibody test has a window period of four to twelve weeks. Most HIV specialists consider this duo test conclusive at six weeks. However, o
fficial HIV testing guidelines still recommend re-testing at twelve weeks for completely conclusive results (1).

Recommendation: Refer to a health care provider for HIV testing.
