Hi there,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS-related information.

The short answer is no. Your daughter is not at risk for HIV transmission based on this event. Let me explain why:

For there to be a risk, the body fluids of a person living with HIV (i.e. blood, semen) need direct access to the bloodstream through an activity like unprotected anal/vaginal sex. HIV needs a controlled environment such as inside the human body to live. Outside of the body, HIV is a relatively weak virus that dies within 60 seconds of exposure to oxygen. So this is why it doesn't live on surfaces. This means that by the time your sex partner zipped up his pants, any HIV that may have been present in the semen (assuming he is HIV-positive, we don't actually know whether this is the case), would have died. Chances are that overnight, that semen would have dried anyway.

You can also know that when it comes to oral transmission, the risk is actually quite low. This is because 1) the mouth is not very efficient at providing access to the bloodstream in the same way that the vagina, rectum and urethra do, and 2) there are enzymes in saliva that inhibit the production of HIV. So even in the event that your daughter were to come into contact with the body fluids of someone living with HIV orally, she would likely still not be at risk.

I trust I have answered your questions; however, if you have any more, please don't hesitate to ask.

All the best

Maggie
