I asked a question yesterday. My previous question's title was "sex with shemale on hormones". Thanks for the valuable information. My 2nd question.. it's been three days since I had sex with a commercial sex trade worker, both oral and anal with protected sex. How can I know whether I was exposed to HIV or not. Is it possible to get a test now?...as her recent result of our exposure is HIV negative I.e yesterday should I start using PEP?

Hi, and thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver with your follow up questions.

It sounds like you are still concerned about your encounter with a commercial sex trade worker. I will do my best to give you the information that you need.

To begin with, the only way to know whether or not you have acquired HIV is to get a test done. We recommend teaming up with a healthcare professional as soon as possible to discuss testing options. You can also talk to your healthcare professional about PEP, however PEP does need to be started within 72 hours and if your encounter was three days ago it may be too late to start it.

You may find this link useful: . It has information about various tests that are available, and how long it takes until they are considered conclusive.

To end with, testing really is the only way to know your HIV status. It is not enough to rely on your partner's test results. I am not sure which area you live in, but if you are in the greater Vancouver area and would like help in finding a clinic or healthcare professional to partner up with you can contact us at the AIDS Vancouver anonymous helpline: 604 253 0566 Ext 299.

I hope that I was able to answer your questions. Please don't hesitate to contact us again if you have any more concerns.

In health,

Sabina
