i've just gave a fleeting kiss to both cheeks to a family member with small cuts on my lips (i'm used to scratch them when i'm nervous). i don't think i'm in danger and think it's paranoia, but i want your opinion. thanks

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the possibility of acquiring HIV from a kiss on the cheek with chapped lips. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be No Risk (transmission of HIV is not possible in the given scenario). HIV cannot be transmitted by closed mouth kissing.

For a risk to exist, specific HIV positive fluids (semen, pre-cum, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, blood) must come into direct contact with the blood stream of an HIV negative person. HIV cannot be transmitted by saliva.

Recommendation: No need for HIV test with the scenario provided, refer to a physician for other health related questions

Regards,
AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Ashley
