Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

It sounds like you are concerned about the likelihood of acquiring HIV from the described exposure.

There are several conditions that are required by a particular activity for HIV transmission to be possible. Generally, for there to be a successful transmission of HIV there needs to be a body fluid, an activity such as unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, and a direct access for the virus to enter the bloodstream. Furthermore, the sexual activities of both kissing and french kissing are distinguished as a No Risk activity. This is due to the activities not satisfying any of the HIV transmission requirements, and there has never been a case where these sexual activities lead to HIV infection.

The fact that the commercial sex worker was menstruating and a smoker would not heighten your risk of acquiring HIV.

Below I have attached an HIV Transmission Equation chart, which goes into further detail about the factors required for there to be a risk of HIV transmission.

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
