Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your questions and concerns. We're happy to help!

This would be considered to be a Negligible Risk. This means that in theory, it may be possible for HIV to be transmitted this way, but there haven't been any confirmed cases in this manner, and the risk if very low and thus is negligible. Saliva doesn't transmit HIV which is why there isn't really a risk associated with receiving oral sex.

For more information about how HIV is transmitted, please refer to this transmission equation:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
Please note that it's important to have all three components present for HIV transmission to even be possible.

Additionally, please refer to avert.org for more information about transmission and prevention of HIV.

Testing is not likely warranted just for this incident as it was a negligible risk, but if you're concerned, a quick HIV test should be able to ease your mind. We recommend that all sexually active individuals get yearly HIV testing and STI testing to maintain their optimal sexual health.

I hope this helped!

Sincerely,

Christina
