Hi there and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. My name is Colin and I'm happy to answer your question today.

I understand you have some questions about the conclusiveness of your test results. Let's get to the bottom of that.

The 4th Generation Test you took (ag/ab test) is the most modern, sensitive common HIV test available and many HIV specialists consider it to be conclusive by 6 weeks. (Here in BC, our local guidelines still recommend a follow up at 12 weeks for a conclusive result. It is sensible to consult with a medical practitioner in your area for the guidelines relevant to you personally.)

The rapid test is a 3rd Generation test which can detect upwards of 95% of new transmissions between 4-6 weeks. A result at 7 weeks is a really great indicator of your HIV status, however it is not considered conclusive until 12 weeks.

At this point, it does not matter which test you take next. A Rapid at 12 weeks is just as reliable as the 4th Generation.

I hope I managed to answer your question today and I hope you're happy with your test results. If you'd like any more information or clarification, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

All the best,

Colin
